For centuries, indigenous communities have faced hardships ranging from colonialism, land grabbing, discrimination, and social inequality. Today, the situation persists, as they are nearly three times more likely to live in extreme poverty than their non-indigenous counterparts. Nonetheless, they have been able to transform themselves to defend their territories data, stories, knowledge and heritage in global arenas. This panel will explore how indigenous communities can defend human rights, not only for their own well-being but also for the climate and nature justice, by improving governance mechanisms, ensuring free access to objective information, revalorizing traditional knowledge, or managing and collecting data.
