Business English Vocabulary: Terms For Working Online || ESL ✅

Hello everyone. My name is Jason, and welcome to this English video lesson brought to you by MainStreetEnglish.com.

The business world now lives online. If you want to talk about how the Internet is used for business, it’s essential to know the correct vocabulary.

In this English video lesson, we will define and use four standard terms for working in the office and online… with examples!

In this English video lesson, we will define and use the following four business expressions:

✅ The Internet of Things, or IoT
✅ Hot-Desking
✅ Bring Your Own Device or BYOD
✅ Two-Factor Authentication, or 2FA

➡️ Number 1. The Internet of Things, or IoT

What is The Internet of Things? Anything that is connected to the Internet and exchanges and collects data. Your computer, smartphone, television, tablet, watch…this is how we communicate with our colleagues from in-office to at-home.

How can we use The Internet of Things in a sentence?

The fact that I can operate my coffee maker with my smartphone is another example of the Internet of things.

To ensure our products are the most sought after, they must be a part of the Internet of things.

As the printer at work is now part of the Internet of things system, I can print out documents from home.

➡️ Number 2. Hot-desking

What is hot-desking?

Hot-desking is the practice of using any available desk when you get to the office instead of having your own assigned desk. It is a way that businesses can save on space.

Let’s use hot-desking in some sentences:

Because my company has adopted hot-desking, I try to go to the office early to get a seat near the air conditioner.

The worst part about hot-desking is that I don’t have a permanent space to set up how I like.

I wish the boss would allow hot-desking in our office. I’m bored of hearing Pam always talking to her friends on the desk next to mine.

➡️ Number 3: Bring Your Own Device or BYOD

If you BYOD, you use your own computers and phones for work. Companies like this because it helps to reduce their overhead costs.

How can you use Bring Your Own Device or BYOD in a sentence?

Someone may ask you, “ Does your company give you a computer to use for your work?”
And you might answer, “No. It’s BYOD”

My company has instituted a BYOD policy, and I now have to use my smartphone for business calls.

Since we’ve incorporated a BOYD at work, I keep mixing up my work and social texts!

Our last business term for online workers is

➡️ Number 4: Two-factor authentication or “2FA”.

2FA is a way for online workers to prove their identity in two ways: with a password and a code sent to their phone. 2FA allows businesses to safely enable their employees to work remotely.

Let’s use two-factor authentication, or “2FA”, in some sentences:

Two-factor authentication can be used as an additional safeguard.

My work involves the integration of 2FA into our product line.

I had to contact the HR department again, as the 2FA system does not recognise me.
