This video is a recording of talks that Jules White and I gave for the AI & Local Business Leaders Event at Vanderbilt University on November 7th, 2023. In these talks we describe how generative AI, exemplified by ChatGPT, has emerged as a disruptive force in the field of computing and business, transforming previous notions of what artificial intelligence could achieve. Initially met with skepticism by experts who considered its capabilities science fiction, it has proven its worth by showcasing an impressive range of functionalities. Generative AI’s ability to automate tasks, such as creating PowerPoint presentations and analyzing documents and images, has demonstrated its practical value in real-world scenarios. We also discuss and demonstrate the significance of structuring human-AI interaction through “prompt engineering,” where large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT can adapt their reasoning based on the persona they are asked to assume. This transformative technology extends beyond text to include advanced computer vision capabilities, allowing for the creation of powerful applications with simple consumer devices, such as iPhone and Android smartphones and tablets. The implications for software and system development are profound, as generative AI continues to simplify complex processes and make them accessible to a wider audience, leveling the playing field for those without much prior specialized technical expertise.
