There are currently five Lifecycle Funds, with an additional five Lifecycle Funds being added soon: L Income, L 2020, L 2030, L 2040, L 2050. These funds are just composed of the other five.
The remaining five Trust Funds are composed of investments in either debt securities or equity securities. These are also known as Bonds and Stocks.
A Bond is a debt instrument with a promise to pay back money with interest at a predetermined time. A Stock is is an equity instrument carrying ownership interest in a corporation. Stocks either gain value as the company expands, or else a company can pay dividends.
G Fund = Government Securities Investment Fund
– Short-term U.S. Treasury Securities (also called notes and deposits)
– Money is guaranteed. You can never lose money, but it barely appreciated above the rate of inflation.
F Fund = Fixed Income Index Investment Fund
– Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index
– Agency bonds, asset backed securities, corporate and non-corporate bonds

C Fund = Common Stock Index Investment Fund
– Standard and Poor’s 500 Index
– 500 large to medium sized companies
– All well known and established companies

S Fund = Small Cap Stock Index Investment Fund
– Small and medium companies not in the S&P 500 (C Fund)
On the New York Stock Exchange there are 2,800 public traded companies under the regulation of the Securities and Exchanges Commission. The C Fund makes up 80% of the total stock market value and the S Fund makes up the remaining 20%.
I Fund = International Stock Index Investment Fund
