CHOOSE WORDS WISELY
Words have the power to destroy and build relationships. They decide the opinion that the listener develops of you. /if you have a habit to use negative words then you must cut down on them. Avoid using words like failure, hopeless, worthless and start adding positive words like acceptance, approval, success, hopeful etc. to your everyday vocabulary. Your words should be colorful and meaningful to keep the hearer hooked onto you.
Slang words are a big “no” for professional conversations and so is slurring.
EXPAND YOUR VOCABULARY
A wide range of vocabulary helps an individual come across as learned and well-read. Start by reading vocabulary books or by watching our videos on vocabulary at Let’s Talk in order to improve your vocabulary. It’s suggested that difficult vocabulary is used with fluent speakers of English, for a lay person we should use easy to understand graded vocabulary.
Keeping in mind, the pace of your speech also shouldn’t be too fast or too slow. A steady volume of speech is quite eluding and therefore take the listener on a roller coaster ride of communication by increasing and decreasing your volume naturally.
EMOTIONS WHILE SPEAKING IS VITAL
Use your emotions while communicating to have an engrossing conversation. The key here is not to let your emotions spill out of the bag way too much. While exercising control over your feelings, the right emotion should be expressed in a conversation. If you’re an emotional person and get stretched to the point of wet eyes, do not hinder yourself from expressing your feelings. A person who can shed tears is stronger and not weaker because they are sensitive to their own feelings while sympathetic to that of others. If you are serious about a matter, an intense expression (not anger) is alright as it would help the listener understand the gravity of the situation. If you laugh too much, continue as the way you are because this shows that you do not let difficult circumstances take a toll on you.
CREATE A PUNCH WITH PERFECT ENUNCIATION
Enunciation is different from pronunciation; it means to speak “clearly”. What is required is not to slur while speaking but you don’t have to speak every word distinctly which is actually wrong. So try to speak clearly even though not distinctly. Through correct enunciation you can add a punch to your conversation.
MAKE USE OF BODY LANGUAGE APPROPRIATELY
This tip will help you master the art of “non-verbal” communication i.e. body language. What you don’t say while communicating is as important as what you say.
Hands and arms: Stiff hands reflect arrogance. It’s better to keep your hands loose and use them for making a point whenever needed.
Eyes: Look into the eyes of the person you’re talking to. If you’re looking elsewhere it shows indifference.
Position: You can sit while presenting in a meeting to show a casual attitude. However if you stand while presenting it denotes strength and passion.
