While I take the stance that you absolutely don’t need to go to school to become a successful Graphic Designer, getting a degree or the college experience in general does have some advantages.

The truth is that some jobs do screen people out based on whether they have a degree or not. In other cases it can be a good opportunity to relocate to a place with more opportunity for you. You can move to another city or country with more jobs for graphic design and marketing. College can also provide you access to resources like software and hardware you may not have in your current situation.

So these may be reasons you decide to go to school for Graphic Design and Advertising.

Do understand though that going to School for Graphic Design does not mean you will be a good Graphic Designer, nor does it guarantee you a job in Graphic Design.

To all the Graphic Designers who want to whine about “This is why there are so many crappy graphic designers” firstly, no it’s not, and secondly I have seen countless designers with Bachelors or even masters degrees that can’t design as well as high school students that I’ve met (or trained for that fact). Some of which are also Graphic Design professors, probably because the person who hired them doesn’t even know the difference between RGB additive color and CMYK subtractive color…
